Janie--the main character. She is a strong, beautiful African American woman who faces many hardships and blessings in her life.
Janie’s Grandma (Nanny)--a loving but repressive woman who brings Janie up and presses her into a marriage she isn’t prepared for.
The Washburn family--the family Janie’s Grandma works for.
Johny Taylor--a boy whom Janie gives her first kiss.
Logan Killicks--Janie’s first husband, the man her Grandma presses her to marry.
Joe Starks (Jody)--Janie’s second husband, a controlling man who becomes Meyer of a town called Eatonville and operator of a store that Janie also works in.
Hezekiah--a man who helps Janie at the store.
Vergibal Woods (Tea Cake)--Janie’s third husband with whom she finally finds true love after her second husband dies.
Phoeby Watson--a close friend of Janie’s.
Lee Coker, Amos Hicks, Sam Watson--town folks of Eatonville.
Ed Dockery, Bootny, Sop-de-Bottom, Zachariah, Gabe, Stew Beef, Motor Boat, Dick Sterrit, Coodemay and ‘Lias--friends of Tea Cake and Janie in the Everglades.
Mrs. Turner--a racist woman in the Everglades who befriends Janie but puts down her husband Tea Cake for his darker complexion.
Nunkie--a girl who tries to seduce Janie's husband Tea Cake.
